Do you like to keep things organized? Does tidying up bring you joy? Have you jumped aboard the minimalist band wagon?
Yeah, us neither.
My name's Mattie Kondo. Please join me and my messy friends in this movement to celebrate the Joy of Clutter.
The Joy of Clutter is a global movement for people everywhere who are tired of being told by self-righteous, 30-something journalists - annoyingly backed by empirical evidence and tightly-honed writing - how we should be living our lives.
What to wear, where to buy it, how to exercise, when to sleep, who to sleep with, what to think… heck, even how to think. You can be sure that somebody somewhere is ready to tell us what we’re doing wrong.
And it’s getting out of hand. Now we’re being told to tidy up, to throw out the old, unused and excessive, to find a home for only those things we truly need.
Well, if sorting your socks by pantone floats your boat, then knock yourself out. But we’ve had enough. And we're not alone.
This website celebrates the Joy of Clutter.
Stumbling over that massive pile of books (we’re never going to read) on the floor by our beds doesn’t bother us. The dusty windowsill laden with our kids’ (quite frankly, terrible) homemade pottery makes us smile. And why on earth would we spend our precious weekends clearing all the crap out of the garage - sure, we’ve concreted over the lawn, but we never know when we might need a mower.
The Joy of Clutter is not about being unclean or lazy; it’s about a genuine love of “stuff.” Things from the past that spark happy memories. That leather jacket we’re too fat to wear but which, in its day, almost made us cool. Shelves of albums we can’t play (because the record player stopped working) that rocked our house parties of the 80s and 90s. Vast crates of half-chewed 1970s toxic kids’ toys long since abandoned by even the dog.
So let’s keep our piles of crap on the stairs, behind the front door, and spread across the kitchen table. Let’s not feel guilty that the garage no longer has room to keep a bike, never mind park a car. So what if the cupboard door under the stairs won’t close properly?
Let’s celebrate the Joy of Clutter together. Send us pictures of your happy mess, and we’ll feature the best here and on our social media channels.
